Further to our recent communications, please see below further information and sample materials for our January 2025 Assessments. This information is provided to help you support your child should you wish for them to take the Assessments in January 2025.

English Reading Paper (45 minutes)

Your child will be given a specific text to answer questions about. They'll need to read the text carefully and answer all the questions in complete sentences, being sure to use quotation marks if they choose to cite words from the text provided and to number their answers clearly.

English Writing Paper (45 minutes)

Your child will be given a specific task to write about and we would like them to use the task to act as a stimulus for an imaginative, well-chosen idea. We would like your child to spend 5 minutes planning and organising their answer, 35 minutes writing their answer and 5 minutes checking their answer at the end.

Your child should use the planning time well to come up with a clearly organised description or story with a beginning, middle and end. This includes writing in clear paragraphs. Your child should aim for more interesting vocabulary use than in everyday life. However, they should not overuse the same sort of language (e.g. lots of similes, lots of colours).

We would like your child to write their answers for both English papers in pen.

Maths Paper (1 hour)

Your child will be given one non-calculator Maths paper, specifically designed to provide an opportunity for your child to demonstrate their ability in problem-solving, logical thinking and arithmetic. The questions are in standard format, not multiple-choice. The paper is broadly aligned with the KS2 National Curriculum.

Non-Verbal Reasoning Paper (45 minutes)

Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR) mainly involves reasoning with abstract figures. For some questions you might look at relationships between shapes and sequences of shapes, by identifying common features from a set of figures and applying them to a new figure. Some NVR question types involve codes, in which features of a shape have to be matched with letters.

Examples of the NVR papers can be accessed online here.
